The Timber

The term Meranti applies to one of a large number of species of Shorea, which is a dominant hardwood genus in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. It is a light hardwood, with heartwood ranging in colour from light pink to light brown; the sapwood is a lighter variant, usually with a greyish tinge. Texture is coarse but even, with interlocked grains.

Meranti is a versatile timber, widely used for decorative applications including; furniture, interior finishing, panelling, mouldings, skirting & architrave.

The Resource

An imported timber, Meranti is a tropical rainforest species, found throughout South East Asia and the islands of the South West Pacific region, including east Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Whilst illegal harvesting of this species still occurs, the Australian Government has restricted the import of any timber not meeting strict, global logging regulations. For this reason, you can be assured any Meranti we supply has been sourced from government controlled, sustainably managed forests.
